She maintained a private life away from the political limelight during the early stages of Karunanidhi's political journey.

Padmavathi Ammal was married to M. Karunanidhi on a September day in 1944.
She passed away in 1948 due to complications related to tuberculosis, the same year her son was born.
Her untimely death deeply affected Karunanidhi. Her jewellery had been pledged to help pay the running costs of 'Murasoli', which eventually became the DMK's official newspaper.
