1. Lala Amarnath is considered the first Test captain of Independent India and is known as the Godfather of Indian cricket.
2. His son, Mohinder Amarnath, was named the man of the series in the 1983 World Cup.
3. Amarnath lived his early years in pre-partition Lahore and was popular in Pakistan as well.
4. He was brought up by his grandfather in Lahore following the passing of his mother.
5. Noticed by Frank Tarrant, the cricket coach for the Maharaja of Patiala, Lala gained recognition.
6. During the 1947-48 Australian tour, he impressed everyone with his batting performance against Australia.
7. After retiring, Lala served Indian cricket in different roles and became the chairman of India’s selection committee in 1955.
8. Known for his short temper on the field, he also had a strong and intense commentator personality.
