Kalpana Patowary, also credited professionally as Kalpana, is an Indian folk and playback singer and politician from Assam.
She is widely known as the 'Bhojpuri Queen' due to her significant contributions to Bhojpuri music.
She has recorded songs in over 30 provincial vernaculars and sung approximately 12,000 songs across multiple languages including Assamese, Bhojpuri, Hindi, Bengali, English, Brajawali, Bodo, Deuri, Mising, Maithili, and Sanskrit.
She was born in a Yogi-Nath family of the Natha Sampradaya community.
She began performing publicly at the age of 4 with her father and is trained as Sangeet Visharad in Indian classical music from Bhatkhande Music Institute University, Lucknow.
She holds the distinction of being the inaugural Bhojpuri singer to introduce the age-old Khadi Birha tradition to international platforms.
She is the first woman to record and sing the Chhaprahiya Purvi style, which was previously a male preserve.
Her debut Bhojpuri album 'Gawanwa Leja Rajaji' released in 2003 became that year's best-selling album in India, selling more than 1 crore units nationwide to date.
She performed at the Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 with an Assamese theme track produced by Bharat Bala Productions.
She participated in the reality show Junoon - Kuchh Kar Dikhaane Ka (2008) on NDTV Imagine.
She was invited to perform on a 15-day tour in four Latin American countries presented by The Ministry of Cultural Affairs on the occasion of Indian Arrival Day.
She was an anchor for the folk music show FOLK JALWA on ETV Bihar.
She served as a judge on the music competition shows SUR SANGRAM 1 & 2 on Mahua Channel.
