On 9 March 2018, he became the Chief Minister of Tripura. He won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Tripura West constituency. He resigned as Chief Minister on 14 May 2022. He was elected as Member of Rajya Sabha from Tripura on 24 September 2022, serving until 4 June 2024.
