1. Dissanayake has been politically active with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna party since school.
2. He idolizes Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin in his political beliefs.
3. At Thambuttegama Central College, he was the first student selected for university admission.
4. He left Peradeniya University just three months after joining due to threats.
5. He strongly believes in Neo-Marxism.
6. Dissanayake was involved in the JVP insurrection against the government during 1987-89.
7. One of his cousins was killed in the JVP insurrection, and his family home was destroyed.
8. He served as the National Organizer for the Socialist Students Association in 1995.
9. Resigned as Minister on 16 June 2005 when JVP parted ways with the United People’s Freedom Alliance.
