1. Sonam Wangchuk was born in a small village with only 5 households.
2. Due to the lack of nearby schools, his mother taught him basics in their local language until he was 8 years old.
3. He later enrolled in a school a few kilometers away but had to leave soon as the language used was unfamiliar to him.
4. In 1977, he went to Delhi and got admitted to a free residential government school for border area children.
5. Although his father wished for him to be a Civil Engineer, Wangchuk chose Mechanical Engineering and financed his studies by tutoring 10th-grade students.
6. In 1988, he founded SECMOL to boost Ladakhi students' confidence through educational reforms, including a campus powered by solar energy.
7. A key figure in Operation New Hope in 1994, he led efforts that increased 10th-grade exam results in Ladakh from 5% to 75%.
8. Appointed to the National Governing Council for Elementary Education in 2005 by the Indian Government.
9. Believed to have inspired Aamir Khan's character Phunsuk Wangdu in the movie "3 Idiots" in 2009.
10. Invented the Ice Stupa in late 2013, an artificial glacier to store and release water vital for local farmers during spring.
11. Received the Rolex Awards for Enterprise in 2016 for the Ice Stupa project, with a cash prize and a specially engraved watch.
