Arrived in India in 1904 at age 22 to work at a leper colony in Subathu, Shimla.
Introduced American Delicious apple variety to the Himalayas, establishing apple cultivation in Himachal Pradesh.
Signed the Congress manifesto in 1921 as the only non-Indian, calling for Indians to quit government service.
Imprisoned by the British in 1921 for sedition and promoting hatred against the government, becoming the only American political prisoner in the Indian freedom struggle.
